There were originally seven wastes of lean manufacturing, but an eighth was added in the 1990s that should not be ignored! Dave Turbide said, “Variously called unused human creativity, under-utilized talent, incorrect use of abilities, unused human intellect, or simply ‘skills’, the eighth waste is perhaps the most important of all… The direct workers out in the plant and the warehouse are best positioned to see how even small changes might make their jobs easier, more productive, or safer. ” Creating ways for all employees to voice their opinions and be heard is a fantastic way to increase both efficiency and employee empowerment. Support, encourage, and reward your employees for speaking up through monetary incentives or public recognition!
